Tune #92: Rocco - Saharien Child

France greets Morocco:

ROCCO - SAHARIEN CHILD (ORIGINAL MIX)

Sémakdji Mourad started DJing with the encouragement of his older brother at local clubs of Lyon, France in his teens. Serving initially as supporting cast for jocks like Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox, Louie Vega and DJ Deep, he developed his craftsmanship as a DJ.

In 2001, he collaborated with Alex Santos (Alex S) and Emmanuel Kossi (Manoo) to form Rodamaal, whose output caught quickly the attention of Ben Watt (of Everything But The Girl fame along with Tracey Thorn) and was published in his label Buzzin' Fly. The most popular tracks of the group were Musica Feliz’ and Insomnia (remixed by Âme), licensed in several compilations.

In the meanwhile, Sémakdji produced his own tracks under the Rocco moniker. His pseudonym resulted from a shortening of his initial name, Morocco, as suggested by a club manager in his early DJing years. Influenced by the veterans of the scene like Todd Terry, Masters At Work and Dimitri from Paris, he established a solid appreciation for deep house music.

After producing several tracks for various labels (Freerange, Defected, MN2S, Real Tone), he marked his name in the club scene. The success of tracks Someday and Memories gave him the opportunity to travel the world, sharing his music. A strong bond has been established with South Africa, a place he visits 3-4 times a year, where he enjoys mostly the appreciation of the crowd for deep house. Even his solo album The Bridge was released by SA label House Afrika Records in 2013, featuring artists and vocalists from South Africa and US.

Although Rocco's favorite place to DJ is found in the southern part of Africa, today's track is largely influenced by Moroccan tradition (I can only guess that Sémakdji has Arabian heritage judging from his name). Saharien Child was released in 2011 by Deeper Shades Recordings, a digital label set up by Lars Behrenroth. The vocal sample is taken from an old folk Moroccan poem, whose content is unknown to me, since I do not speak the Arabian lingo. However, this unfamiliarity does not prevent the listener to be moved by the emotion of the lyrics, combined with the ethno flavoured melody. For full listening experience, I would suggest the Lars' versions:

It is a pity that the track is not available in physical format, a must have for appreciators of high quality music!

Tune #91: Electrotete - I Love You

I was always curious for the vocal snippets sampled in tracks, a classic gimmick used in electronic music. Trying to identify the source of the samples was an endless quest, which was extremely more difficult in the years before the world wide web.

This post is no exception:

ELECTROTETE - I LOVE YOU (ORIGINAL VERSION)

Before sharing the information of this track, let me have a flashback in the 80's. In 1982, a band called Brilliant was formed in London, following the craze of British synth pop. It was commercially unsuccessful, but it was notorious for its involved members, who followed later a famous career in the music business:
- Martin Glover aka Youth (founding member of the Killing Joke) would be a prominent producer and remixer!
- Jimmy Cauty would become the one half of the KLF!
- Ben Watkins and Stephane Holweck would be innovators in the goa trance scene!

Even the management group of the band were famous figures:
- David Balfe (manager of the band) founded the independent record labels Zoo Records and Food.
- Bill Drummond (record company A&R manager) would become the other half of the KLF!
Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman, mostly known as Stock Aitken Waterman, were one of the most successful production partnerships from mid-1980s through the early 1990s.

Today's track belongs to Ben Watkins & Stephane Holweck. Propelled by the explosion of the acid house movement, they collaborated in 1989 for the creation of a pure electronic music project called Electrotete. Their first EP was released in 1991 by Rave Age Records, an influential French label founded by Manu Casana, who was responsible for hosting the first rave events in France. The track appears in this EP as a B-side in its original form.

One year later, the track was re-released with new versions by Apollo, the offshoot label of R&S records for the ambient division. Additional remix duties were performed by Anthony Thorpe (of The Moody Boys fame) and Danny Van Wauwe & Peter Ramson. The second remix sticks more to the original idea, containing additional elements (like an emotional piano loop and woman moaning):

ELECTROTETE - I LOVE YOU (REMIX VERSION)

Unfortunately, the lifespan of Electrotete lasted until 1994, when Shark / Alcatraz EP was released (by Apollo again). The latter track was included in The Goa Mix of Paul Oakenfold in the same year. I believe that the main reason for this was the popularity of their other project, which is no other but the legendary Juno Reactor, one of the core originators in goa trance!

Gradually, Stephane had less involvement in the JR moniker, making Ben the mastermind and undisputed leader of the project till this very day. The former focused on his side project called Total Eclipse, collaborating with the fellow French men Loïc Van Poucke and Serge Souque.

P.S. The "I Love You" sample is taken from Twin Peaks series, as the first video indicated. A interesting fact about this sample is that it is was also used a few year later by Jam & Spoon in Neurotrance Adventure:

Tune #90: Chris Raven - I Know You Love Me Too!

A few days ago I accidentally came across the original version of track I Know You Love Me Too! by German producer Chris Raven (Chris Raabe).

CHRIS RAVEN - I KNOW YOU LOVE ME TOO! (ORIGINAL MIX)

BIO (an "improvised" German to English translation, taken from this Facebook page)

Chris Raven was born in 1972. His first contact with electronic music can be traced back to the start of the 90's in Solingen, a German city. There, he established his first residency at the Orange Club. During his tenure at the club, he organised electronic music events with other known DJs, like Westbam, DJ Dick and Steve Mason. Soon, he attracted the attention of Adam & Eve records, for which he would be become the label DJ, with appearances at Berlin's Love Parade and Zürich's Street Parade. He continued to spin records not only in other places of Germany, but also in Holland and Belgium.

In 1996, he collaborated in the studio with Bart Van Der Zwaan and Dr Logatec (editor's note: For some reason, I am not sure if Dr Logatec is a different person or an alias of Chris Raabe) for the production of his first track named I Know You Love Me Too!, which was released one year later by Electronic, an EMI sublabel. The track gained so much popularity, that it was licensed by important EDM labels, like Bonzai Records in Belgium and Additive in England, while it was canned by superstar DJs of this era (Paul Oakenfold, Sasha & John Digweed), reaching as classic status among clubbers.

Between the period 1999-2003, 3 additional EPs followed:
- I Lost You (2000)
- Smegma / Nevermore (2001)
- Loss Of Memory (2003)

Along to his original productions, he was involved in remix duties for other artists. Major League - Wonder/Wonder Where You Are? (a collab between Tiesto and Armin Van Buuren) and Gaia - 4 Elements (project of AVB) are the most known to be mentioned.

Until 2014, he was a regular DJ for Familiär Statt Populär parties held at Orange Club in Düsseldorf (editor's note: Likewise, I am not aware if it is the same club moved from Solingen to Düsseldorf or a new, different place). Mixing techno, prog and house music, he continues to mark his presence at the clubbing scene.

[End of "improvisation"]

Three remixes have accompanied the original version of today's track, all released in 1997. The version by Van Bellen is a multi-layered production: a 4x4 beat, a 303-esque acid bassline and the seductive vocals lead to the main hook, composing a banging dark progressive trance stomper.

CHRIS RAVEN - I KNOW YOU LOVE ME TOO! (VAN BELLEN REMIX)

The second remix is created by Bruce Norris. It is less sophisticated, but the emotional trance pads, which the version is based on, generate an uplifting feeling with greater emphasis on the vocal sample:

CHRIS RAVEN - I KNOW YOU LOVE ME TOO! (BRUCE NORRIS REMIX)

The last (and the lesser known) remix is provided by Dr. Logatec with the epic-like pads:

CHRIS RAVEN - I KNOW YOU LOVE ME TOO! (DR. LOGATEC REMIX)

I have in my possession the Additive vinyl, which features the Bruce Norris/Van Bellen remixes. Based on my current mood, I select the appropriate side of the vinyl!

Tune #89: Invisible Rockers Crew - Electro Empire

I always wanted to provide a review for this group, but I postponed it for some reason. I guess that nostalgia reasons surfaced the today's post...

Back in 2006, 3 guys living in the suburbs of Athens form Invisible Rockers Crew, the first electro funk group in Greece (according to their claim). To be honest, I was not aware of any other local group focused on this music genre, so I believe that their assertion is truthful.

I happen to have known one of the guys since high school years, discussing about old school hip hop (later I got acquainted with all of them). I was not very familiar with the electro funk scene (only the big names like Afrika BambaataaEgyptian LoverHashim & Jonzun Crew), only to discover a couple of years later the existence of IRC. Their sound is heavily influenced by old hip hop/electro, polished with a new touch aided by the contemporary hardware and software.

That was it! I was instantly hooked with their music. I remember as a personal favorite one of their first tracks called "We Will Prevail", which had been uploaded on their MySpace account. Unfortunately, it is not available in the Internet, to be posted here. Therefore, I will present a track taken from their only EP, released in 2010 by Vicious Freak Records (a one-off label of IRC).

INVISIBLE ROCKERS CREW - ELECTRO EMPIRE

For those who are not very fond of the "tribute" vocals, there is the dub version:

INVISIBLE ROCKERS CREW - DUB EMPIRE

Their sound was spread outside of Greek borders, appearing in compilation/mix CDs by various European labels (NoiZe Electro HubCity Beat RecordsElectro Avenue Records and the iconic Street Sounds). Additionally, the team has performed live along with masters of the genre (in 2009 with Egyptian Lover at BIOS and in 2011 with Afrika Bambaataa at Fuzz Club). I had the chance to attend the second event and I was amazed by their show (cannot say the same though for Bam, who was unfortunately very boring...).

The today's post is a thank you message to the guys:
- Truant the master (Andreas) *
- Devastator (Jorgan)
- Fres the freak (Giannis)

* Nowadays, Andreas is co-owner of Entropia Records, an online record store, specializing in obscure releases of various electronic music styles. Their base located in Athens is worth visiting for their hand-picked stock.

I hope that the guys will someday release some new material. However, I am certain for one thing: if the robots are going to be evolved in the future to perform all human operations, they would break dance to the sound of IRC!

Tune #88: 3KZ - A Love Supreme

Italian techno music delivers:

3KZ - A LOVE SUPREME

3KZ is the collaborative project of Italian producers Giuseppe Maffei and Nico Campanella. Hailing from Puglia (a district of South Italy), the two youngsters shared parallel paths in music, since they both were captivated by the techno music of the 90's.

Giuseppe is mostly known with this solo alias Z.I.P.P.O. since 2014, when his first production Symmetrica Therapy was surfaced in a EP by German label Figure. His alias is associated with the composition of eclectic techno tracks, presented by various European independent labels (Suburban Avenue, Involve Records, Enemy Records, Virgo). Additionally, he is the owner of Fides, a record label focused on releasing his and Nico's material. At the end of this month, his new project Midnight Conversation (with the fellow Italian Mattia Trani) is expected to be released, whose output seems a fine mixture of nu funk / nu jazz.

Nico emerged in the music scene as Kaelan, via his label Subosc in 2012 (initially in digital-only format). His work can be considered as a harmonic interpretation of the Detroit sound, since his training on classical piano blends perfectly with his inspiration from techno legends (Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, Derrick May), in order to produce a trippy musical experience. His other solo aliases are also interesting for listening purposes (2030 for electro productions and Ixm for dub techno tracks).

Personally, I believe that their collaborative effort as 3KZ is the most creative. In 2017, their debut album Parallel Reflections was released via Fides and it is undoubtedly a top notch LP (with an amazing artwork cover!). The two guys work splendidly into crafting sublime melodic techno with modern equipment.

This year, they return with a new killer EP called A Love Supreme, released in March by Berlin-based label Arts. For some reason, the tracks remind me the early works of Ludovic Navarre (St. Germain anyone?), who was one of the pioneers for the French techno scene.

Finally, I hope that they visit someday Greece for an ambient jam session like this one!

Tune #87: KiNK - Cloud Generator

Dope Generator!

KINK - CLOUD GENERATOR

One of 2015's strongest releases was delivered by producer Strahil Velchev, hailing from the Bulgaria's capital, Sofia. Currently, he is considered one of the top live acts, a fact which is not strange for a synth and machine aficionado. However, his road to glory was not an easy one...

Mr. Velchev's musical background was shaped by the explosion of house & techno music of the early 90s, supported by pirate cassette tapes that circulated the country after the collapse of communism. His first attempt on music production started in 1999, performed on a simple computer system due to weak financial viability for more sophisticated hardware.

In 2001, he teamed up will fellow Bulgarians KEi, SuB & Ogonek, in order to create pBPM (porno bpm), aiming to push the boundaries of club culture and to promote the different genres of electronic dance music. One year later, a promo CD was released in Bulgaria, consisting of the first works of the group members.

The first production years (until 2005) were not fruitful for Strahil, since no label was interested in signing his tracks. This inactivity caused him to feel isolated from the wider techno culture, but it also fueled him for a more creative output in his future works.

In 2006, KiNK discovered that UK DJ and producer Neville Watson had included his track Same Old Thing in his DJ sets. As a result, the two guys communicated and exchanged tracks via social media, since they shared the same taste in music. Two years later, their first collaborative work Inside Out appeared in Hour House Is Your Rush Records. The funny thing about this story is that they did not actually met each other until 2010, in order to perform as a DJ duo in an electronic music event.

KiNK's greatest success to date is the today's post; Cloud Generator was created in an indeliberate manner during a rehearsal for a live show. The combination of a turntable loop and a bassline forged a strong techno track, which led to an EP release by German label Running Back in 2015. Needless to say that the influence from Laurent Garnier's trademark sound is evident throughout the track. Supported by notable DJs around the world (Laurent Garnier, Dixon, Andrew Weatherall & John Digweed to name a few), KiNK's sound has made its mark to the club scene. Besides Cloud Generator, the homonymous EP is worth listening, especially for the arpeggio of Pocket Piano's two versions, which creates a nostalgic tone.

A side-project of Strahil Velchev is Cyrillic (or Kirilik), which is more techno-oriented and limited in terms of gear; while KiNK live sets involves various digital, analog and DJ equipment, Cyrillic sound is based on a standard DJ setup. Hopefully, the current year will find the first release of his other alias!

Tune #86: Kohib - One Hundred Of Them

Exploring further the Norwegian electronic sound of the 90's, traces can be found in Tromsø, the innovative city regarding the house & techno scene of Norway (also know for its proximity to the Aurora Borealis!). Several important artists lived in that area, such as Geir Jenssen (Biosphere)Bjørn Torske (Ismistik)Per Martinsen (Metal Overdrive)Rune Lindbæk and Ole Mjøs. Even Röyksopp, known for their works here in Greece, started their career in Tromsø!

The connecting point for all these artists originated from a local student radio station and a show called Beatservice, curated by Vidar Hanssen (along with Nick Johannessen in the first years). The radio show introduced the listeners to various styles of electronic music. Year 1994 marked the 10th anniversary of the show, celebrated with the compilation TOS.CD - Tromsø Techno 1994. The comp CD included prominent acts of the city (the ones mentioned above), along with emerging artists like Aedena Cycle, Electrip-C and Information.

What initially started as an one-off project resulted to the launch of label Beatservice Records, which continues to exist till this very day (mostly in digital format). Today's track is part of Beatservice's legacy:

KOHIB - ONE HUNDRED OF THEM

Kohib is an alias of Øivind Sjøvoll, a Norwegian artist from Sortland. His first step in music was DJing in 1997, moving on with organizing club events in Tromsø. In 2001 he performed his first compositions as Parliavox (teaming up with his friend Torbjørn Ingvaldsen), fusing funk and jazz with house elements. Since 2003, he started to produce solo works, resulting to the debut of the Kohib alias with track Truger in the Prima Norsk 3 compilation in 2005.

The majority of Kohib's output has been released by Beatservice Records, oriented on leftfield dub house tracks. In 2012, a collaboration of Sjøvoll with Sami singer Mari Boine surfaced via the EP Tirakan. Mari Boine is a famous world music singer of Sami heritage (her parents lived in Sápmi region, located in the northern parts of Scandinavia and inhabited by indigenous people of the Sami tribe, also known as Lapps). She enjoyed international success with the Gula Gula album, released in 1989. It seems that Kohib was a great admirer of Mari's work, since he provided a remix of her song The Shadow in 2007. Regarding the Tirakan EP, Øivind and Mari had a studio session, leading to the creation of two tracks: the homonymous track and One Hundred Of Them.

My first encounter with One Hundred Of Them was during the listening experience of "A Love From Outer Space" set by Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston, notorious for their obscure track selections, blending slow motion grooves with cosmic disco and leftfield techno. The track is a great choice to include in an experimental dance set, since Mari's tremulous and ethereal vocals generate an outlandish feeling!
