Tune #97: Transform - Transformation

What I like most in early trance releases is the hypnotic deep melodies and beats. Primitive, yet innovative compositions create a trippy experience, set free from the formula that was adopted years later in the trance genre. One perfect example is Transformation by Transform!

TRANSFORM - TRANSFORMATION (CLUB MIX)


I was not aware of the track, until I found and bought the compilation Logic Trance 2, a collection of early 90's trance, techno and ambient compositions. The collection was curated by Logic Records, a German label set-up by Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti, commonly known as the production force behind Snap!. The label also served as the production home for Cosmic Baby (Harald Blüchel), after his first years in the legendary MFS.

Behind the Transform alias you can find German producers Ralf Hertwig and Tommi Eckart. Both of them have been active since the early eighties, being members of new wave/punk bands in Germany. Between the late 80's and early 90's, they were involved in various electronic music acts (Marathon, Pulse, Caesar, Time Unlimited), following the dance craze of acid music that emerged since the second summer of love. Their only collaboration occurred only for one officially released EP by Cyclotron, a short-lived label in Frankfurt.

While the EP was successful (with several releases and licensing from other labels), the two members did not join forces again for the production of new material. One interesting fact for the EP is that Resistance D (Pascal F.E.O.S. and Maik Maurice) assisted in the realization of the project, since they were credited as co-producers in the release.

Listening to Transformation, you can realize that the hypnotic groove and the trance pads accompanied by the haunted woman chants are sufficient for a solid early trance release. The origin of the vocal sample is not verified, but the voice is reminiscent of Jane Fonda's (possibly extracted from Barbarella film).

Finally, if you think that the woman chants are familiar, then you may have listened to classic trance track La by Marc Et Claude, with remixes by the big players of the trance era (Ferry Corsten, Taucher, Binary Finary, Lange, Van Bellen).

Flashback στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 90, επιστρέφοντας στην ίδρυση μίας σημαντικής δισκογραφικής εταιρείας και στην πρώιμη μορφή της trance: Η Eye Q Records ιδρύθηκε το 1991 από τους Sven Väth, Heinz Roth και Matthias Hoffmann.

Για τον "Papa Sven" τα λόγια είναι περιττά: ένα πιτσιρίκι που γεννήθηκε στην μικρή πόλη Obertshausen έφτασε από την πώληση flyers στην Ibiza γύρω στις αρχές των 80's να εξελιχθεί σε έναν pop star της Γερμανίας και στη συνέχεια σε πρώτο όνομα στην τέχνη του DJing παγκοσμίως!

O Heinz Roth εκτέλεσε χρέη manager για το label, μία δουλειά ήδη γνωστή από την εποχή που ο Sven ήταν μέλος του συγκροτήματος OFF (1986), μαζί με τους Luca Anzilotti & Michael Munzing (a.k.a. SNAP!).

Ο τρίτος της παρέας δεν είναι τόσο γνωστό όνομα όσο ο Sven Väth, αλλά σίγουρα ήταν η κινητήριος δύναμη μαζί με τους Ralf Hildenbeutel και Steffen Britzke που καθιέρωσαν τον λεγόμενο "ήχο της Φρανκφούρτης"!

Με τις ευλογίες της Eye Q Records κυκλοφόρησαν κομμάτια-ορόσημα για την γερμανική trance:

• Vernon - Vernon's Wonderland
• Hardfloor - Acperience Ι
• Cygnus X - The Orange Theme

καθώς και το all time classic Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar!

Επίσης, από το κατώφλι της πέρασαν σημαντικοί Γερμανοί παραγωγοί ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής, όπως οι Paul Schmitz-Moorman (Kid Paul), Harald Blüchel (Cosmic Baby), Oliver Lieb (G.O.A.T.), Pascal F.E.O.S., Oliver Bondzio και Ramon Zenker (οι τεχνίτες της acid μουσικής). Αν η MFS του Mark Reeder εκπροσωπούσε στη δεκαετία του 90 τον ηλεκτρονικό ήχο του Βερολίνου, τότε βρήκε το αντίπαλο δέος στην Eye Q Records της Φρανκφούρτης. Δεν είναι άλλωστε τυχαίο το γεγονός ότι αρκετοί από τους αναφερθέντες κινήθηκαν και στα 2 μονοπάτια.

Το 1997 έμελε να είναι το (ουσιαστικό) τέλος για το label, καθώς ο Sven Väth αποχωρεί επικαλούμενος καλλιτεχνικές διαφορές σε σχέση με τους συνεργάτες του. Λίγους μήνες αργότερα, η Eye Q κυρήττει πτώχευση, αφήνοντας το ανθρώπινο δυναμικό της απλήρωτο για καιρό. Μέχρι τις μέρες μας, το label συνεχίζει να υφίσταται μετά από 2 εξαγορές (1998 από την UCMG και 2004 από την Daredo), αφήνοντας τις δόξες του παρελθόντος στη λήθη...

Το σημερινό κομμάτι ανήκει στις στιγμές που οι Hoffmann - Hildenbeutel - Britzke συνεργάστηκαν από κοινού. Το No Fate κυκλοφόρησε το 1991 από τον Zyon, κατά κόσμο Renè Swain, με φωνητικά του ίδιου και παραγωγή από την ιδιοφυή τριπλέτα. Η ιδιομορφία του κομματιού είναι εμφανής, καθώς συνδυάζει τα rap vocals του Zyon με την trance μουσική των 3 παραγωγών.

Η πιο γνωστή εκδοχή του κομματιού είναι το No Fate Mix '93, χωρίς τα φωνητικά του Renè και σε πιο γρήγορο tempo, τονίζοντας περισσότερo τα trancy στοιχεία:

Η επιτυχία του No Fate στην underground σκηνή αύξησε τη δημοτικότητα του Väth στο Omen (το μαγαζί που είχε ανοίξει για να παίζει τη μουσική της αρεσκείας του), ενώ παράλληλα ανέδειξε το ταλέντο της τριάδας να παράγει σπουδαία κομμάτια. Δυστυχώς, αυτή η πετυχημένη συνταγή θα διατηρηθεί μέχρι το 1997: ο Sven Väth θα επικεντρωθεί στην καριέρα του ως DJ, ενώ οι Hoffmann - Hildenbeutel - Britzke θα συνεχίσουν την παραγωγή μουσικής ως Schallbau...
