Dance Pool was a successful mainstream dance label company in Frankfurt Germany. Several famous acts released music in the label, such as Culture Beat, Jam & Spoon, The KLF. In the 90's, it served as the label to release classic eurodance tracks (Culture Beat - Mr. Vain, Ice MC - Think About The Way, Maxx - Get-A-Way) that ruled the dance charts. The last release can be found in 2003...

Data Records was not a classic label per se, however it was a great introduction for trance newbies at the turn of the millennium (1999-2002). Some indicative examples are ATB - Till I Come, Storm - Time To Burn, Zombie Nation - Kernkraft 400 and releases by Kamaya Painters and Oliver Lieb (the original version of Subraumstimulation is a tech-trance masterpiece). It was a sublabel of Ministry of Sound, originally focused on trance music. After the unification of all genres in one label, Data Records lost its touch.

A classic one! Deconstruction Records was established in 1986 by Pete Hadfield and Keith Blackhurst, but it reached its glory days when Hacienda's resident DJ Mike Pickering joined as A&R. All the masterpieces from the early days of UK house music can be found here: T-Coy - Carino, Guru Josh - Infinity, N-Joi - Anthem, M People ‎– How Can I Love You More and K-Klass ‎– Rhythm Is A Mystery are a handful of them. The label was also the first production home for Sasha and Way Out West. The legendary status of the label was maintained until 2000.

Dedicated was a British independent record label that released music between 1990 and 1998 by Spiritualized, Spacemen 3, Global Communication, Beth Orton (in the U.S.), Chapterhouse, Cranes and others. It was based in London and founded by Doug D'Arcy. The label deserves a reference just for the release of Global Communication - 76:14, one of the best ambient music albums (thank you Mr. Pritchard & Mr. Middleton for the blissful experience of 12:18).

Tune #91: Electrotete - I Love You

I was always curious for the vocal snippets sampled in tracks, a classic gimmick used in electronic music. Trying to identify the source of the samples was an endless quest, which was extremely more difficult in the years before the world wide web.

This post is no exception:

ELECTROTETE - I LOVE YOU (ORIGINAL VERSION)


Before sharing the information of this track, let me have a flashback in the 80's. In 1982, a band called Brilliant was formed in London, following the craze of British synth pop. It was commercially unsuccessful, but it was notorious for its involved members, who followed later a famous career in the music business:
- Martin Glover aka Youth (founding member of the Killing Joke) would be a prominent producer and remixer!
- Jimmy Cauty would become the one half of the KLF!
- Ben Watkins and Stephane Holweck would be innovators in the goa trance scene!

Even the management group of the band were famous figures:
- David Balfe (manager of the band) founded the independent record labels Zoo Records and Food.
- Bill Drummond (record company A&R manager) would become the other half of the KLF!
- Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman, mostly known as Stock Aitken Waterman, were one of the most successful production partnerships from mid-1980s through the early 1990s.

Today's track belongs to Ben Watkins & Stephane Holweck. Propelled by the explosion of the acid house movement, they collaborated in 1989 for the creation of a pure electronic music project called Electrotete. Their first EP was released in 1991 by Rave Age Records, an influential French label founded by Manu Casana, who was responsible for hosting the first rave events in France. The track appears in this EP as a B-side in its original form.

One year later, the track was re-released with new versions by Apollo, the offshoot label of R&S records for the ambient division. Additional remix duties were performed by Anthony Thorpe (of The Moody Boys fame) and Danny Van Wauwe & Peter Ramson. The second remix sticks more to the original idea, containing additional elements (like an emotional piano loop and woman moaning):

Unfortunately, the lifespan of Electrotete lasted until 1994, when Shark / Alcatraz EP was released (by Apollo again). The latter track was included in The Goa Mix of Paul Oakenfold in the same year. I believe that the main reason for this was the popularity of their other project, which is no other but the legendary Juno Reactor, one of the core originators in goa trance!

Gradually, Stephane had less involvement in the JR moniker, making Ben the mastermind and undisputed leader of the project till this very day. The former focused on his side project called Total Eclipse, collaborating with the fellow French men Loïc Van Poucke and Serge Souque.

P.S. The "I Love You" sample is taken from Twin Peaks series, as the first video indicated. A interesting fact about this sample is that it is was also used a few year later by Jam & Spoon in Neurotrance Adventure:

Όπως και να έχει, σήμερα παρουσιάζεται ένα (κυριολεκτικά και μεταφορικά) μεγάλο κομμάτι!

THE ORB - THE BLUE ROOM (FULL VERSION)


Η ιστορία των Orb είναι αρκετά πλούσια. Το μουσικό project δημιουργήθηκε αρχικά από τους Alex Patterson και Jimmy Cauty το 1988. Την ίδια περίοδο ο Cauty είχε δημιουργήσει μαζί με τον Bill Drummond το ανατρεπτικό σχήμα των KLF (βλ. Tune #20), δίνοντας περισσότερο βάρος σε αυτή την κατεύθυνση. Η επιλογή του αυτή είχε ως αποτέλεσμα την αποχώρησή του από τους Orb, οπότε ο Paterson έγινε ο κύριος και μόνιμος εκφραστής του σχήματος.

Με την πάροδο του χρόνου διάφοροι αξιόλογοι καλλιτέχνες αποτέλεσαν κομμάτι της πορείας των Orb. Ενδεικτικά αναφέρονται οι Thomas Fehlmann, Martin Glover και Kris Weston.

Η μουσική του Paterson είναι εμφανώς επηρεασμένη από τους ambient ήχους των Brian Eno και Tangerine Dream, οι οποίοι ήταν καινοτόμοι την δεκαετία του 70. Για σχεδόν μία δεκαετία, η ambient μουσική πέρασε στην αφάνεια, μέχρι να επανέλθει στο προσκήνιο στις αρχές των 90s από τους Orb.

O Alex Paterson έχει να επιδείξει και συνεργασίες με ιερά τέρατα της παγκόσμιας μουσικής σκηνής, όπως ο David Gilmour (μέλος των θρυλικών Pink Floyd) και Lee Perry (βασικός ιδρυτής της dub και της reggae).

Για το Blue Room τι να πει κανείς... Είναι ένα 40-λεπτο ταξίδι στον κόσμο της ambient και της dub, χρησιμοποιώντας ταυτόχρονα πολλά samples, αρκετά για τα οποία δεν υπάρχει καμία γνώση σχετικά με την προέλευσή τους. Ο Dr. Paterson άλλωστε είναι μάστορας στην τεχνική του sampling, η οποία είναι βασικό θεμέλιο των παραγωγών του.

Πιθανώς το κομμάτι προοριζόταν να έχει μεγαλύτερη χρονική διάρκεια. Αυτή η υπόθεση είναι λογική από το γεγονός ότι τα αγγλικά charts είχαν τον πραγματικά ηλίθιο περιορισμό ότι μία κυκλοφορία πρέπει να έχει διάρκεια μικρότερη από 40 λεπτά ώστε να θεωρηθεί single...

Υ.Γ.1: Ο Oliver Lieb έχει χρησιμοποιήσει ένα sample (από τον Paterson?) που ακούγεται και στο Blue Room για το κλασικό Netherworld ως LSG.



Υ.Γ.2: Κατά την "μεταβατική φάση" Cauty - Paterson στους Orb, πρέπει να υπήρχε στα σκαριά ένα album. Μετά την αποχώρηση του, ο Cauty το κυκλοφόρησε μόνος του με το alias Space, αφαιρώντας τις όποιες παρεμβάσεις του Paterson.

Υ.Γ.3: Πριν από 3 χρόνια είχε προγραμματιστεί η πρώτη εμφάνιση των Orb στην Ελλάδα. Για κάποιο ακατανόητο λόγο η διοργανώτρια αρχή είχε ορίσει την διεξαγωγή της συναυλίας την ημέρα του τελικού του Champions League. Αποτέλεσμα: η συναυλία ακυρώθηκε και έτσι χάθηκε μία πολύ μεγάλη ευκαιρία να απολαύσει το ελληνικό κοινό τους γνήσιους εκφραστές της ambient house...

Oι KLF (πιθανό ακρωνύμιο του Kopyright Liberation Front ή Kings of Low Frequency) αποτελούνται από τον Σκωτσέζο Bill Drummond και τον Άγγλο Jimmy Cauty. Η πρώτη επαφή του Bill Drummond με την μουσική ήταν την δεκαετία του 1970, όταν ήταν μέλος του συγκροτήματος Big In Japan. Στη συνέχεια (μετά τη διάλυση του συγκροτήματος), έγινε παραγωγός για άλλα συγκροτήματα και εργαζόταν στο τμήμα A&R της δισκογραφικής εταιρείας WEA. Ένα από τα συγκροτήματα, με τα οποία συνεργαζόταν ήταν οι Brilliant, μέλος των οποίων ήταν ο Jimmy Cauty. Η γνωριμία των δύο είχε ως αποτέλεσμα τη δημιουργία ενός music group, που εισήγαγε τα είδη των ambient house και stadium house. Το group αρχικά είχε την ονομασία JAMs (Justified Ancients of Mu Mu), το οποίο μετονομάστηκε αργότερα σε KLF. Ένα άλλο alias που χρησιμοποίησαν ήταν το Timelords, πιάνοντας την κορυφή των charts με το τραγούδι Doctorin' The Tardis (το οποίο αποτέλεσε αφορμή για την συγγραφή ενός manual για την επίτευξη του no. 1 στα charts). Για τους KLF θα μπορούσε να αναφέρει κανείς πολύ περισσότερα πράγματα, καθώς αποτελούν ένα πολύ ενδιαφέρον music project (αλλά το post θα κατέληγε σεντόνι!).

Τι το ιδιαίτερο έχει αυτό το τραγούδι; Μα φυσικά η συνεργασία των KLF με την Tammy Wynette, που αποτέλεσε σημαντικό εκπρόσωπο της country μουσικής. Οποιοδήποτε άτομο θα ήταν επιφυλακτικό σε μία τέτοια συνεργασία, αλλά οι KLF φρόντισαν να εξαφανίσουν οποιαδήποτε αμφιβολία με αυτό το ωραίο κατά ένα περίεργο τρόπο.

Πιθανώς λόγω της μεγάλης επιτυχίας τους, οι KLF διαλύθηκαν με δραματικό τρόπο (μετά την επεισοδιακή παράσταση τους στα Brit Awards) και εμφανίζονταν παροδικά ως 2K, The K Foundation και The One World Orchestra.
