Tune #105: Rabbit In The Moon - Deeper

Rabbit In The Moon is an American electronic music group that was established in 1992 by David Christophere (Confucius), Steven R. McClure (DJ Monk) and Steve Eachon (Bunny). The group represented the Florida breaks scene of the 90's along with DJs Kimball Collins & Chris Fortier.

RITM rose to prominence with the dancefloor classic O.B.E. (Out-Of-Body Experience), which was released in 1993 by Hallucination, an indie label set-up by Confucius & Monk for releasing their output. The track was later featured in various DJ mix CDs (with Northern Exposure being the most important one) and was also licensed to west coast label Hardkiss (East meets West) with new remixes. After 1994, they broke the American barriers and reached the European electronic music scene, performing remix duties for Orbital, Goldie, Cosmic Baby and Sarah McLachlan. Additionally, they collaborated with German group Humate (then consisted of Gerret Frerichs & Patrick Kjonberg) for the 4-tracker Hemispheres E.P. The success of the EP produced an additional release with remixes for one of the tracks-hemispheres (East).

Today's track is a B-side taken from a purple-tinted vinyl, released by Hallucination in limited edition. Deeper is a hypnotic breakbeat track that includes the representative breaks sound of RITM. Firstly exposed to it via Chicane's comp CD, it is certainly not a track to pass through. A nice trivia of Deeper is that it features a slowed down sample of Kate Bush vocals, taken from her song And Dream Of Sheep.

In 2002 Monk leaves the group, which continues to exist till this day as duo (Confucius & Bunny). While I am not familiar with their latest sound, it seems that their live performances are very intense and cinematic, a sight worth seeing!

Tune #81: Simple Minds - A Brass Band In African Chimes

In 2001 Beachwood Music, a label notorious for its crappy compilations, assigned Nick Bracegirdle to create a compilation of tracks which represent the sound of Ibiza. Nick was enjoying his G.O.A.T. years with his Chicane & Disco Citizens aliases at the time, so he seemed the appropriate person for the job (Offshore is still regarded as one of Ibiza's anthems).

Like most 2-CD compilations, the classic formula is also applied here: The 1st CD is the chillout interpretation of the project, consisting of downtempo tracks with mellow melodies and breakbeats. The 2nd CD is the more club-friendly, with some of the most famous house & trance tracks of the 90's.

The non-electronic (or the least electronic!) track of the compilation is A Brass Band In African Chimes by Simple Minds:

SIMPLE MINDS - A BRASS BAND IN AFRICAN CHIMES


Simple Minds are a famous Scottish band of the 80's. Initially found success in the UK, the band achieved international fame with the song Don't You Forget About Me (which was included in the film The Breakfast Club). Although they are mostly known for their new wave/synth-pop productions (Alive & Kicking, Someone Somewhere In Summertime, Waterfront), three tracks distinguished them from the other new wave bands:
·         Belfast Child: an expression of empathy for the people of Northern Ireland after the                               Remembrance Day bombing (possibly an answer to U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday?)
·         Mandela Day: a freeing cry for the then-imprisoned Nelson Mandela
·         Today's posted track

A Brass Band In African Chimes was released in 1984 by Virgin, firstly as a B-side to Up On The Catwalk, and one year later (as a B-side again) in Don't You Forget About Me. Composed by Simple Minds and produced by Steve Lillywhite (who was the driving force behind the first 3 albums of U2), this lush instrumental can perfectly fit as a closer in a DJ set. Although the composition does not bear strong resemblance with the classic Simple Minds sound, an association can be found through the distinctive guitar riffs of Charlie Burchill.

An interesting trivia for the track is that it was actually a reconstruction of a demo version for Shake Off The Ghosts, which appeared in album Sparkle In The Rain (1983):

Simple Minds have deeply influenced the electronic music with their tracks: Some representative examples are:
·         Latour - Blue (featured in movie Basic Instinct) sampled the intro of Theme For Great Cities.
·         U.S.U.R.A - Open Your Mind (an Italo progresssive house anthem) is largely based on                         track New Gold Dream.
·         CJ Bolland - Golden Dreams (one of the first rave tracks) uses a sample from Big Sleep.

Simple Minds are one of the most underrated bands in the history of music. While their beginning was pretty much in parallel with the Irish U2, they former never reached the fame status of the latter. The band faced a commercial decline in the 90's, only to revive in mid-00's. However, their contribution to the music of the 80's is undisputed.

Tune #7: Salt Tank - Eugina

Μετά από πολυήμερη αποχή λόγω ανειλημμένων υποχρεώσεων (καταραμένο DI...) επιστρέφουμε με ένα πολύ σπουδαίο κομμάτι της trance μουσικής, το οποίο είναι η Eugina των Salt Tank.

Οι Salt Tank είναι ένα μουσικό project που δημιουργήθηκε το 1991 από τον David Gates και τον Malcolm Stanners. Το μουσικό duo ήταν ενεργό μέχρι το 2002, όποτε και ακολούθησε μία μεγάλη περίοδος αδράνειας, η οποία τερματίστηκε πρόσφατα το 2009 με την παραγωγή νέων συνθέσεων.

Η Eugina κυκλοφόρησε το 1994 και αποτελεί το πιο γνωστό τους κομμάτι. Παρουσιάζει ένα sample από το τραγούδι "Me And A Gun" της Torie Amos (ειδικότερα τους στίχους "Do you know Carolina? Where the biscuits are soft and sweet."). Ο ήχος του τράγουδιού φαντάζει τόσο διαχρονικός, αφού εξακολουθεί να μαγεύει όποιον τον ακούσει.

Η επιτυχία της Eugina όμως δεν είναι μοναδική. Άλλα γνωστά τραγούδια των Salt Tank αποτελούν το Leaving Town (το οποίο αποτελεί προιόν συνεργασίας με τον Chicane και μιξαρίστηκε ξανά το 2009), το Αngels Landing καθώς και άλλα.

Φυσικά, θεωρείται αυτονόητο ότι η Eugina αποτέλεσε προιόν πειραματισμού για πολλούς DJs. Ως αποτέλεσμα, πολλά remixes δημιουργήθηκαν, με πιο δημοφιλές αυτό του Michael Woods.

Tune #3: Chicane - Offshore

Το μενού σήμερα έχει ένα τραγούδι από τον πιο αγαπημένο μου καλλιτέχνη, τον Chicane. Και όταν μιλάμε για Chicane, σίγουρα ένα από τα τραγούδια που έρχεται στο μυαλό κάποιου δεν θα μπορούσε να είναι άλλο από το Offshore...

CHICANE - OFFSHORE (ORIGINAL)


O Chicane, a.k.a. Nick Bracegirdle, είναι μουσικός συνθέτης και όχι DJ όπως ισχυρίζεται σε συνεντεύξεις του. Η πρώτη του επιτυχία έρχεται το 1995 με το Right Here, Right Now ως Disco Citizens, το οποίο ήταν μουσικό duo αποτελούμενο από τον ίδιο και τον Leo Elstob (βασικά ο Leo Elstob ήταν και μέλος των Chicane, αλλά αποσύρθηκε από το σχήμα, όπως και από τους Disco Citizens, μετά το δεύτερο album ως Chicane, Behind The Sun).

Ωστόσο, η μεγάλη επιτυχία αποτέλεσε το Offshore, το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε το 1996 ως single και το 1997 στο πρώτο album, Far From The Maddening Crowds, το οποίο αποτελεί ένα από τα καλύτερα cds της ambient μουσικής. Από την κυκλοφορία του μέχρι σήμερα βρίσκεται σε παραπάνω από 100 compilations, αποτελεί ένα από τους κλασικούς ύμνους της Ibiza και είναι ένα από τα τραγούδια με τα περισσότερα remixes (όπως η Stella των Jam & Spoon).

Προσωπικά μιλώντας, το συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι δεν βαριέμαι πότε να το ακούω. Έχει κλασική και διαχρονική αξία. Είναι απλά κορυφή...

Για τους φίλους των vocals, δημιουργήθηκε μία εκδοχη η οποία αρχικά ήταν bootleg. Ειδικότερα, ήταν μία έξυπνη ιδέα από τον Anthony Pappa, ο οποίος σκέφτηκε να δημιουργήσει ένα mash-up, το οποίο θα συνδύαζε τη μουσική του Offshore με τα φωνητικά από το τραγούδι A Little Love, A Little Life από τους Power Circle. Το mash-up αυτό έγινε τόσο δημοφιλές, ώστε εμφανίστηκε επίσημα στο Far From The Maddening Crowds.

Άχρηστη πληροφορία #7 (πέρα από τις υπόλοιπες που έχω αναφέρει πριν) : Στην original version εμφανίζεται η τότε κοπέλα του Nick Bracegirdle, ενώ στο mash-up εμφανίζεται (πιθανώς) η vocalist από τους Power Circle, της οποίας το όνομα μου διαφεύγει. Φυσικά και στα 2 εμφανίζεται ο Nick Bracegirdle.

Άχρηστη πληροφορία #8 : Τους συγκεκριμένους στίχους πάντα θυμόμουν ότι τους είχα ακούσει σε μία ταινία. Μετά από αρκετό ψάξιμο βρήκα ότι ακούγονταν (ως A Little Love, A Little Life όμως) σε μία σκηνή από την ταινία Love In Paris, ένα τραγικό sequel της ταινίας 9 1/2 εβδομάδες.

Ίσως χρήσιμη πληροφορία : Στο παρόν blog θα εμφανιστούν και πολλά άλλα τραγούδια από τον Chicane, όντας ο αγαπημένος μου καλλιτέχνης.
